We take an auto rikscha to visit the mountainside Mahakala cave in which the Buddha did penance for some years before coming to Bodhgaya. The back roads are adventurous but when we arrive the pilgrim footpath to the cave temple is broad and well maintained although lined with beggars as usual. In front of and inside the cave many candles are lit (and later recycled). Still we don’t find the cave spectacular so we decide to climb the hill top where a few guys are busy fastening long ropes with colored flags to the rocks. These flags can be found at every Buddhist pilgrim site. On the flags texts have been printed - probably Buddha quotes. The flags flying in the wind like kites are a nice and peaceful view amidst the arid mountains.
