In a letter to his son he outlined the goals of his Visva Bharati University: “The school at Santiniketan should be built up as a link between the world and India. Here a center for humanitarian studies should be set up. The universal family of man that is conceived in the future should be initiated in the fields of Bolpur. The stand of Pan Humanism should be first planted here … to free this world out of the sentiments of nationalism is the last task of my old age.”

On his 80. birthday a telegram arrived: “Four score not enough. May you finish five, Love - Gandhi.” He replied: “Thanks message. Four score impertinence. Five score intolerable.”
