Recommended Reading / Listening
My little Indian farewell diarrhea provides me with the long sought opportunity to compile a list of our on the road reading / audio books. The original titles (in German or English) are listed below.
- Benjamin Prüfer: Same same but different - a true story with great insights into a Cambodia that has not changed too much in the past few years (this German story comes with an English title)
- Jan Josef Liekers: Dr. Siri und seine Toten - a sympathetic crime story from the days of Communist Laos
- Jan-Philip Sendker: Das Herzenhören - the ultimate love story from Burma (today’s Myanmar)
- John Burdett: Bangkok Eight - the dark side of the metropolis in a crime story that probably does not exaggerate a lot
- Indien hören (read by Rufus Beck) - a good introduction to and overview of Indian history and culture
- Vikas Swarup: Six Suspects - a spectrum of Indian society wrapped in a crime story providing lots of opportunities to smile at serious issues
- Aravind Adiga: The White Tiger - dark humor accurately describing the situation of the Indian poor in the countryside and the city
- Amitav Ghosh: Sea of Poppies - a novel about the 19th century opium trade in India and first part of a trilogy
- Shashi Tharoor: the Elephant, the Tiger & the Cellphone - today’s India in collected columns written by India’s candidate to succeed Kofi Annan as UN Secretary-General
- Chetan Bhagat: one night @ the call center: a story about the personal hopes and wishes of a group of young Indians that goes to heart
- Edward Luce: In spite of the Gods - modern India as experienced by the Financial Times’ South Asia bureau chief based in Delhi from 2001 to 2005
